LESSON OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to:

• Define elder abuse
• List three types of elder abuse
• Describe four signs and symptoms of elder abuse
• Name two factors that may contribute to elder abuse
• Describe the role of the home health aide as it relates to elder abuse recognition and reporting

LESSON OVERVIEW
Elder abuse in domestic settings is an increasing problem. While the true incidence of elder abuse is unknown, hundreds of thousands of elderly adults are abused each year in the United States. Reports of elder abuse to Adult Protective Services agencies increased 150% between 1986 and 1996.

The problem of elder abuse is so widespread that in most states certain professionals are required by law to report cases of domestic elder abuse. The greatest reporting of elder abuse comes from health care providers. Because home health aides typically spend more time with the frail elderly patient, they may observe signs of elder abuse that are not evident to other providers. Their observations and reports to professionals can be instrumental in triggering investigations and providing help to these patients.
