Can medical social services stand alone, or are they considered a dependent
service?
A:
Medical
social services are a dependent service, meaning there must be a qualifying
skilled service already being provided. Medical social services can be covered
by Medicare if the patient is experiencing social and/or emotional problems
that, in the judgment of a physician, are or could be a barrier to effective
treatment. Documentation must demonstrate the connection between the patients
social or emotional problems and the impediment to effective treatment they
create. Documentation must also justify the services.
